PWHT: what to check before treating a weld

Heating alone is not enough. Material, procedure and thermal records are the starting point for a well-prepared technical discussion.

A weld may look complete and still require a heat-treatment assessment. Post-weld heat treatment, or PWHT, is used under specified conditions to change the material condition and reduce residual stresses. Not every joint requires it, and different materials do not share one universal cycle.

Start with the component requirements

The decision depends on material, thickness, operating service, welding procedure and the applicable code. Collect these details before requesting a quotation. A photograph helps explain access, but cannot replace material identification or technical documentation.

Do not reuse temperatures or holding times from another job simply because two components look alike. The responsible technical specialist must review the specification. This article does not prescribe operating parameters.

Heating is only one part

A cycle includes controlled heating, holding and cooling. Measurement locations and recorded temperatures also matter. Preheating and post-heating serve their own purposes; they should not automatically be treated as equivalent to the specified PWHT.

Electric or gas-fired treatment

TERANING's portfolio includes both approaches. Selection considers geometry, access, component size and execution conditions. An image is not a basis for choosing a technology: define the scope first, then assess a suitable solution for that asset.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Component identification, material and available thickness information.
  • Drawings or photographs of the overall component and treatment area.
  • The procedure, code or specification requiring treatment.
  • Location, access, equipment availability and operating restrictions.
  • Required delivery documents and records.

Agree on the handover

Before work begins, agree on how the component, treatment zones and thermal records will be identified. Traceability makes it possible to compare the recorded work with the requested scope. Resolve missing information during planning rather than improvising during treatment.
